How does the Internet work? So, how does it work? First, any company or individual can get online, as long as they
have a computer, a web browser, a
modem, and a regular voice telephone line. Next, the owner must
contract service from an ISP. The user than can surf the web, visiting sites from all
over the world, dealing with almost any subject.
Who Pays for the Internet?
During the early 1990's, the National Science Foundation paid for most fo the Internet.
Since then, the Internet has experienced explosive growth, and is no longer used solely
by educational institutes and the military. Such dramatic growth has also increased the
cost of keeping up the Internet. Because of these factors, the government is trying to
shift most of the costs to the private sector.
Who Owns the Internet?
No one really "owns" the Internet. No single government or commercial organization runs
the Internet, and there are no official rules that govern its use. The Internet is
operated by the collective efforts of every organization connected to the Internet.
Sounds excellent. So is there money involved?
